As of 2006, 704 people tested HIV positive, 29.70% of the HIV-positive persons in the country. 270 of these (28.3%) were men; 433 (30.6%) were women.

It was previously the British Crown colony of Basutoland, which was given independence by the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.
